    This is an awesome bike.

The bike arrived early. It was simple to assemble and set up. It does require a few tools as any bike does. It is super good quality. Purchased for an avid bike riding 11 year old that spends most time on 1 wheel anyway. This bike is awesome looking and performance is solid for any rider.

Attractive bike but brakes are SUCK!

It’s a good bike but the brake system is much to be desired. Bought a cable tensioner to help. Seems the brakes have much room for improvement. The boy keeps mentioning them in his passive aggressive ways. 🙄 better try next time mongoose. UPDATE 6.2.2022 took the bike the the bike shop and they can’t get the brakes to work either. My son hates the bike so much because he almost got hit by a car! As a Mom I am totally freaked out that I won’t let him ride it anymore. WASTE OF MONEY. Looks like I am buying another bike. I can’t afford it (single mom) but my son needs to be safe.

    Good for the price

The bike is a good value for the price. The only issue I had with it are the brakes. They are just hard rubber and don’t do a great job at stopping the bike. If my son is riding he can’t pull on the handles hard enough to lock the back tire. And if I am on the bike it isn’t capable of stopping the bike on a moderate hill.

    Cannot assemble yourself

After reading some of the reviews about missing parts and not being able to assemble this bicycle, I still ordered it taking the chance. I received the box, took out all the parts, everything was there. But as I went to put things together the instructions are not for this bike. They are not helpful at all. Even after calling the manufacture, they directed me to their website which still does not have the correct instruction. There was nothing about this particular Gyro brake installation. I could not figure it out. I had to take it to a cycle service center, paying them $100 to put it together. Turns out the brake cables were not long enough to be installed on this bike, so I wasn’t doing anything wrong it was just defective. Plan on some extra assembly cost to get this thing together. Or better yet, choose a different bike. We haven’t ridden it yet, so hard to say on the functionality. Will update soon

    Solid bike older kid/adult

Let me preface this by mentioning I’ve assembled a number of kids’ bikes and have rebuilt my own (mountain) bikes. This is a solid bike I purchased for my 12 year-old (<5') that my 9 year-old is also able to ride as am I (6'). It was pretty easy to assemble (directions were clear) and all parts included; nothing broken/damaged.This model bike, per specs and picture, only has a rear brake which works as expected. My kids are not riding ramps or rails or performing tricks; riding in the street and occasionally off-road at the bmx park (dirt) and if this is what you're using it for, this is a good value in terms of it being the last bike of this type I suspect my kid will own.The one thing I'd mention is that the seat post is bmx-height (low since you're rarely sitting on it); if you plan on using this more for just biking around, invest in a longer seat post (I used a 25.4 x 350mm available elsewhere on the site) -- you can keep the seat and just switch this out.The bike came in an undamaged box; I presume this is the way they all leave the factory -- if yours is damaged on receipt, that's on the delivery company.

So much fun, brakes a little weak

Easy to assemble in 15 minutes, bike rides very smooth & looks super rad. I bought this to ride with my 5-yr-old son & he’s proud that his dad rides a badass bike lolMy only complaint is that, out of the box I had to learn how to disassemble and adjust the rear brake because it wasn’t really working well. Even after proper calibration, do not expect to stop on a dime with this bike. If I’m riding fast & need to slam the brakes, I’m putting my feet down to help stop moving.Aside the brake issue, I absolutely love it

    Brakes don’t work

Bike is great otherwise, but the brake pads are rock hard plastic, and don’t grab the rim at all when pressure is applied.Would recommend replacing them.

    Cutting corners

The instructions do not match the product. There are no videos or anything on assembly. And why is it every bike or scooter I buy for my children these days is missing parts? So far, this is missing a lock nut for the handlebar assembly. I spent $300 on a bike with the wrong instructions and missing parts. The quality of the bike itself is fine, but I feel like assembly would be much smoother with better instructions and all the necessary pieces.

I Will NEVER buy another Mongoose

With all of the four and five star ratings, I must be the problem, right? The bike came partially dissembled for shipping purposes. I expected that. What I did not expect was:1. Missing parts. One of the nuts and both of the washers were missing from the front wheel. Ok. A shipping problem. But what kind of washers do I need to go find? Should be simple. Just read the instructions.2. Horrible Instructions: For example, to attach the front wheel, I need to follow the appropriate set of instructions depending if my bike’s wheel is, “nutted with step retaining washer, nutted with clip retaining washer or quick release”. But I don’t know which one my bike is; the nut and both washers are missing. Every section is just like this; follow the set of instructions that pertain to your bike. But where does it say if the bike I purchased has a quill stem, a threadless stem, a front load stem or a top load stem? I have no idea. Mongoose has been around for a while. So there are plenty of videos on YouTube. But there are so many configurations for Mongoose bikes, good luck finding the right one.I watched a bunch of videos, went to Wal-Mart (twice) and got $30 worth of nuts, washers, hex drivers and, no I didn’t go out and buy the lithium gel they recommended! Then I paid a bike shop $45 to put the thing together because I still couldn’t figure it out. The bike shop wouldn’t do the brakes because of liability purposes. But they showed me that I needed to loosen a nut and put the brake cable out some. Should be easy, except…3. CHEAP parts!: I stripped a nut and two screws trying to tighten the brakes just enough to barely work. It’s Christmas Eve and I’m soooo frustrated.Should I be worried? Every single step in the instruction book says that if I don’t do this step correctly, someone could get seriously injured or killed. Here ya’ go son. Have fun! Merry Christmas.I could call Mongoose Customer Support. They are open Monday through Friday 8 to 5; because that’s when dads assemble bikes right?Sorry for all of the venting. I’ve had the bike for a week and I have to say, I have NEVER had this much trouble assembling something that came in a box. I’ve got $250 invested into a $170 bike and I don’t feel safe letting my son ride it.I am not a happy customer.

    wow!

all the negative reviews had me worried. BUT none of those problems applied to our bike. no brake problems, no missing parts, nothing wrong. my wife who barely remembers righty tighty lefty loosy put it together in 20min. brakes were pre-iinstalled, literally all she had to was put on the handlebars, the front wheel, and the seat. my son is 3’9″ and is just big enough to ride the L18 with 18″ wheels. to top it all off i bought the damaged box deal for 160 vs the 250+ regular price

Extremely Easy to Assemble. Bike Looks Amazing. M8x1.25 Tap May be Needed.

The bike from the pictures looked pretty cool. I didn’t realize how beautiful this bike would be until it came in the mail. I purchased the Legion Mag in orange for my 8 year old. It was great to see his reaction on Christmas when receiving this bike. He was so excited. I read some other reviews from reviewers who had complaints on the difficulty of assembling the bike and in my opinion the people having trouble assembling the bike must be blatantly ignorant or illiterate. The instructions for assembly are written so a teenager could assemble this bike, with clearly labeled diagrams and more in depth explanations than what is necessary for assembly. The instructions on assembly are excellent and I had almost no trouble assembling the bike without them until it came to adjusting the brakes. I assembled the entire bike without instructions except for the brakes because it is just self explanatory. I was also able to assemble the brakes without any trouble or needing the instructions although I did refer to them for proper adjustment and alignment protocols. The only issue I had when assembling the bike is when I got to the point of attaching the handlebars to the handlebar binder assembly attached to the stem. The four socket cap screws that tighten down on the handlebar binder bracket would not thread easily. I felt as though I would break the screws or destroy the threads if I attempted to tighten them down far enough to grip the handlebars. There was too much paint in the threaded holes and also the tolerances on the machining of the threads was not great. I have included some pictures showing just how much paint was removed from tapping and also chips from burs in the threaded holes from poor tolerance drilling and tapping at the factory. In order to fix this problem I grabbed a tap handle and a M8x1.25 normal thread tap and tapped the holes. I would give this bike a 4.9 out of 5 if I could just because I needed to tap these holes and a tap was not listed as a required tool. I don’t think many people will have problems assembling the bike even if they have this issue and need to tap the four holes as these are the only holes that need anything to be screwed into. Honestly if you don’t at the very least know how to use a tap and die set you probably shouldn’t be assembling a bike as it’s not safe to do so if you’re not familiar with basic tools. You could wind up hurting your child from pure negligence if you don’t know how to use basic hand tools to assemble this bike properly. My suggestion is that you take it to a local bike shop and pay $30-$40 to have them assemble the bike and adjust the brakes if you don’t know what you are doing. I assume some people who buy this bike will do just that with the majority of people knowing how basic hand tools work and them being able to assemble it themselves. Overall the bike is amazing, my son loves it, it was extremely easy to assemble, and I recommend you tap the holes on the handlebar binder even if it doesn’t need it as it will allow you to make a more secure connection. Please don’t listen to people complaining about difficult assembly as it was extremely easy even the detangler brakes something of which I’ve never seen or dealt with on a bike before. The instructions are very clear on how to hook the brakes up and how to adjust them properly and I was actually surprised how easy it was to assemble the brakes because I was expecting something very difficult based on the reviews but it turns out these brakes are easier to assemble than normal brakes.

    Awesome bike, easy to assemble

Bike is beautiful, my 8 year olds reaction was priceless. He has a little difficulty with the hand breaks which I adjusted up to make them easier to use. The pedals have little raised teeth for grip, not as sharp as other pedals but they have already made a few scratches on my young riders legs but we are only in his 2nd of riding without me holding the seat and he is still learning. Was deciding between the Legion Freestyle and the Walmart mongoose bike for $50 less and I’m so glad I went with the Legion Freestyle as I believe assembly would have been incredibly more difficult on the Mongoose bike sold at Walmart. Look forward to buying again for my 2 other kids as soon as they are ready.

Good looking bicycle, son loves the look

Went together pretty easy. Instructions read well. Was better than going to 5 different stores in the area trying to find a bicycle. Son has had dit almost a month and it’s still in one piece…so that’s a bonus. He could break a brick with a feather like any 12 year old.

    Issues from the beginning…

Ordered the bike for my son for Christmas. Assemble was not bad until I realized the rear tire was so bent that the brakes will not work. Contacted customer support which was easy to deal with. That sent a new rear wheel but not a new freewheel. Which after doing research is pretty much impossible to change without the right tool. Mongoose is close again today so I am not sure if they will replace the freewheel or not or if ai am going to have to buy the tool to do it myself or pay someone to do it for me. It would be nice for my son to be able to use his Christmas gift!

Nice bike, brakes are a hassle

Very nice, fairly light weight bike. Assembly was pretty easy. The instructions are for many different bikes so a little hard to understand. The brakes are what I had the biggest problem with. Because of a spacer on the handlebar neck I could not do the simple task of just threading the brake line into the hand brake. Had to take the handlebars of, insert the cable, then out them back on. After the this, and probably 2 hours of adjust meant, got the hand brakes to the “easiest” to apply and a tight clamp on the wheel. It is still very hard for my 9 year old to squeezes nd even when fully applied does not lock the rear wheel. the brake pads slip on the tire rim. Being the only brake this is pretty lame as until my son feels he can stop quickly he is not comfortable on the bike. It rides great though and looks really good. My advice would be unless being able to turn the handlebars 360 degrees, look to see if Mongoose makes this model with standard hand brakes. The standard mongoose hand breaks on my daughters bike stop it instantly with much less hand pressure.

    It’s a decent bike

It’s good for a mag bike everything works the way you expect it. The brakes are sort of worthless. That’s normal on mag rimes. My big complaint is the made in china sticker on the down tube. That sticker was over the line I damaged the paint finish on my bike bad trying to get the sticker off. The glue used on that sticker was over the line. Worst sticker I tried taking of ever no matter how much rubbing alcohol I used it just wouldn’t work. When I did get it off it was covering a defective weld. I kinda wish I got another bike now really.

    Extremely disappointed

After reading some of the reviews, I was starting to think I chose the wrong bike. However, it was delivered in excellent condition- no damage to box, no missing parts, etc. I bought this bike as a Christmas gift for my grandson who is 9 years old. My brother put it together and says is was not hard to assemble. The only complaint my grandson has is that he says it’s hard to peddle. I don’t know a whole lot about about bikes but with other bikes, he would just spray a little WD40 and all was good. Not the case with this bike. Since Christmas, I can count on one hand how many times he has rode this bike.If anyone has any suggestions, please advise.

    Wrong there size

We got about half way through putting it together, and the front tire didn’t fit. After about 20 minutes of googling, and you tube videos thinking we did something wrong.. the front tire is the wrong size. So now 2 days before Christmas and the main attraction for my son is not going to be there. I wish we would have put the bike together sooner, to find out but sadly timing when the boy wouldn’t be around didn’t allow that. Calling customer support in the morning (after business hours currently) to see if they will give us options on replacing the tire.Edit, down to 2 stars, specifically because 2 days before the holiday their customer support is closed until after the holiday. So I have no other option than to go to a bike store and buy a new tire. I can say I will not be buying anything like this online again. A $250 bicycle, comes with the wrong parts and i cant even get customer support.

    Good bike for beginners

I like the style and look. I like that it feels solidly built. I don’t like the seat (too narrow, my son didn’t like it, so we used our old bikes seat). The rear break pad rubbing on the rim, tried to make adjustments but to no success, but the wheel still spins just fine (no major resistance). My son doesn’t do bike tricks yet, he’s a beginner, and this bike is just what he needs to learn riding. I give this bike, 4 out of 5 stars.

This is actually our second time purchasing this bike for our kids. They like the look of it and it is ok as far as assembly. But, for the second time, we have issues with the breaks not working straight out of the box. Beautiful bike, Assembly was a nightmare..!

Update : Got bike back from bike shop. Still its not coming to a complete stop when I try to brake. Very nervous to give it to my Son. 70$ at bike shop also wasted now. They say it’s the best they can do and brakes are not good. Will send it back.Beautiful Bike, My son loved the Orange color. He has not tried it yet as bike is in the bike shop.Cons :Assembly was a nightmare, the little disc in front where I had the screw the end of brake line coming from handle was bent one one side. Managed to straighten it, but was unable to screw the brake cable tip in. Had to use pliers and forcefully screw this in.Getting the brakes to work turned out to be impossible. I have assembled 4 to 5 bikes before, not a pro, but have all pro tools. No matter what I tried, all the adjustments did not help.Found the real wheel closer to the fork away with chain. Tire was rubbing against the U-brake levers as well as the plastic chain cover.Again, after so much time playing around, I was able to push wheels away from chain and get tires from not rubbing against brake levers or chain cover.Still brakes would not work. Appears to grip rims , but would not stop even after several YouTube videos and adjustments. Read many reviews and also tried all the tips to adjust brakes. Finally after several hours and day 2 of efforts, I took to a bike shop. They said the U-brakes are of a cheap kind. For another 70$, they have agreed to fix the brakes. Next time, I will think twice before I order bike online.

Great bike and at great price.

I bought this for my 7 year old grandson for this birthday. It was big hit and now I’m a hero! Hahaha, The build quality is excellent and the paint is amazing, it seems to go from light to dark green in the sun. It was easy to put together and with my granddaughter’s help we managed to get in assembled in 20-30 minutes. Time will tell if it lasts, I might update in a year. Exceeded expectations.

My son has only ridden it 4 times and everytime we have a new problem. First no matter how tight we made the seat it wouldn’t slide down when he was riding it, the second time he rode it the brakes stuck when he would use them and we would have manually pull it off the tire, now yesterday the chain is grinding on something and I have no idea what. He has been so disappointed in it. The only good thing is it looks good.

This bike was maddeningly painful to assemble because of one specific brake issue. The rest of assembly was straight forward, easy-moderate, for a non toolsy person. It took me about 40min to install the bike except for brakes and then another 3 hrs of frustration for the brakes. It is a U shaped brake design. It came with pad that fit right over the metal rim part of wheel. Applying the brakes would stop the wheel if spun but skid with riding. I spent a lot of time thinking it was an issue with not tightening the wires enough. My friend came over and helped but we both couldn’t figure it out. Directions are pitiful, they describe different type brakes completely. After downing a beer, getting “I told you so” by wifey, and cursing an unspeakable number of times, I read through all of the reviews to find help. No specific advice but 1/3 of the poor reviews complained about brakes and other positive reviews liked the brakes. One person mentioned U shaped brakes so I YouTubed specifically U shaped brakes. YouTube for “Mongoose bmx brakes” does not yield help. First video led me to salvation.Pro tip:You have to place the break brakes on the lower edge of the rim as in the picture. It cannot be lined up over the center part of the silver rim. That just causes it to skid. Bam, fixed!TL:DR summary= place pad on lower edge of rim. Saves you 3hrs and scoldingDirections suckKid likes it bec of color and it’s coolHave no idea about long term quality yet

    Light weight

Overall decent bike for a kid just starting to ride BMX. Nice light weight frame and rims. Kickstand sucks. Might need to tighten chain.

    Great bike- bad shipping

We received the bike in pieces and it took about a half hour to out together. The front tire tube would not hold air so we had to put the tire from a different bike on it so my son could use it. I had to contact mongoose directly and request a new tire tube. They stated they didn’t have any in stock… what? They asked us to use our 6 bike shop to fix their mistake and they would reimburse me. There was multiple emails and we’ll see if I get the check.Bike is great though! We purchased on sale so that was even better. It gets lower stars only because dealing with this tube problem was quite a headache.

Not happy with this bike at all for 7 year old

I’m not a fan of writing this, but I want to warn other parents about getting this for their kids.1, The bike is cool looking – if that’s all you care about get it..2, The brakes take the strength of an adult to stop the bike properly. You cannot stop the bike with the pedals and there is no way to covert it. (I brought it to a bike store for both issues). My 7-year-old has a REALLY hard time stopping the bike, I’m nervous every time he uses it. I have tried many ways to adjust it!3, The kickstand got loose and the bike fell on the ground after maybe 2 weeks of use. The kickstand came attached to the bike, I didn’t attach it.

    Excelente bicicleta
